Discover more about St Stephen's Green

St Stephen's Green, or *Faiche Stiabhna* in Irish, is a beloved 22-acre Victorian park located in the center of Dublin. Its history stretches back centuries, originating as a marshy common used for grazing. In 1663, Dublin Corporation enclosed the area, selling land around the perimeter and creating a central green space. Over time, the Green became a fashionable resort for the city's well-to-do, with Georgian houses replacing earlier structures. However, access was restricted to residents until 1877 when Sir Arthur Guinness (Lord Ardilaun) championed its reopening to the public. He financed the redesign of the park, which was completed in 1880, giving it its current Victorian layout. Today, visitors can enjoy a variety of features, including tree-lined avenues, a duck pond, ornamental gazebos, and a bandstand that hosts summer concerts. The park also contains sculptures and memorials, such as those dedicated to James Joyce, Constance Markievicz, and the Great Famine. A garden for the visually impaired offers a sensory experience with scented plants and braille signage. St Stephen's Green provides a peaceful retreat in the midst of Dublin's vibrant city center.
