Discover more about Famine Graveyard Sligo

The Famine Graveyard in Sligo stands as a solemn tribute to the victims of the Great Irish Famine (1845-1849). This memorial park, located in Ballytivnan, Sligo, is the final resting place for thousands who died in the Sligo Union Workhouse during those devastating years. The workhouse, which opened in 1841, became a place of last resort for the impoverished, and its graveyard holds the remains of those who succumbed to starvation and disease. Unlike typical graveyards, the Famine Graveyard is notable for its lack of marked graves. This reflects the mass burials that took place during the famine, where individual recognition was impossible amidst the overwhelming death toll. However, the site is marked by the 'Faoin Sceach' memorial, a bronze sculpture of a lone tree surrounded by upright boulders, erected in 1997 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of 'Black '47'. The sculpture, by Fred Conlon, incorporates a 'Sceach' (Whitethorn bush), which in Celtic tradition was considered a sacred object, offering protection to the unnamed dead. Visitors to the graveyard can walk the grounds and reflect on the profound impact of the famine on Irish society. The atmosphere is peaceful, encouraging contemplation and remembrance. The site serves as a reminder of the struggles faced by past generations and the importance of compassion and remembrance in the face of adversity. The entrance to the graveyard is from the car park opposite St John's Special School on Clarion Road.
