Rath Mor, also known as Rathmore, is an enchanting historical landmark situated in the picturesque Co. Roscommon. This ancient artificial mound dates back to the 6th-7th century CE and forms part of the broader Rathcroghan complex, a site steeped in Irish mythology. The Rathcroghan complex, one of Ireland's six Royal Sites, stretches over six square kilometers and includes over 240 archaeological sites.Rath Mor itself is a large, stepped mound, approximately 30 meters across, encircled by a deep ditch. An eastern causeway leads to the top of the mound, suggesting it was once a high-status dwelling site. Geophysical surveys have revealed traces of hearths, pits, and ovens, indicating that the mound was a bustling place of life and protection for the local population. It is believed that festivities and pagan rites were celebrated here, and food markets were likely held, with farmers setting up stalls to sell the season's harvest.While there is no public access to Rath Mor, visitors can admire this historic monument from the roadside or request a guided tour from the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre.
