Oak Park Forest Park, situated on the outskirts of Carlow Town, presents a tranquil escape into a mature, mixed-species woodland. This 120-acre park boasts a rich history, dating back to the 1600s when it was part of the Oak Park Estate. Originally owned by the Cooke family and later the Bruen family, the estate played a significant role in Anglo-Irish politics. The Bruen family resided here until 1957. In 2006, part of the estate was given to the people of Carlow and developed into a recreational and amenity facility. Today, Oak Park Forest Park features a network of color-coded circular walkways extending over 4 kilometers, including the Butlers Wood Loop, the Lake Path, Fox Covert Track and Sally Island Trail. These trails wind through a diverse woodland with a predominance of beech, oak, Scots pine, silver fir, larch, and sycamore trees. The park's lakes and surrounding areas provide a habitat for swans, ducks, and various wild and game birds, making it a haven for birdwatchers. Visitors can explore historical features such as the grand arch and the ruins of a church and graveyard. The park also offers various facilities, including an accessible playground, outdoor exercise equipment, picnic tables, wheelchair-accessible walkways, and a car park.
