Discover more about Croppies Grave

Croppies Grave, located in the tranquil setting of Graigue, Carlow, is a site of profound historical significance. It marks the final resting place of over 640 United Irishmen who were killed on May 25, 1798, during the Battle of Carlow. These men, known as "Croppies" for their cropped hair, were insurgents in the United Irishmen's rebellion against British rule. The events leading to the Croppies' demise were marked by betrayal and ambush. The United Irishmen, seeking Irish independence, were met with a well-planned attack by royal soldiers. The memorial stands as a testament to the wild and ruthless manner in which the royal soldiers maintained power at the time. The site itself features a large mound, which is the mass grave covered in quicklime. A handsome monument rises above the site, commemorating the fallen. The walls and balustrades of the grave were funded by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The memorial slab was donated by Rowan McCoombe, an Orangeman, bearing an inscription that reads: “In memory of 640 United Irishmen who fell on Tullow Street on 25th May 1798”. The cross monument was unveiled on July 24, 1898, celebrating the centenary of the Rebellion. It was created by James Walsh, a local sculptor, and is made of limestone from nearby Carlow-Graigue quarries. Visitors to Croppies Grave can expect a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by lush greenery. Plaques and inscriptions provide insight into the events of the rebellion. The location encourages contemplation and remembrance of the past.
