    Discover more about Talbot Tower

Talbot Tower, located on Lower New St in Kilkenny, is a beautifully preserved remnant of the city's medieval defenses. As the only complete surviving defensive tower of Kilkenny's original nine, it provides a tangible link to the past. The tower defended the southwest corner of Kilkenny's Hightown, with walls extending to the River Breagagh and Kilkenny Castle.Originally known as St. Patrick's Tower, it was a crucial part of the Anglo-Norman fortifications built in the 13th century to protect the town and assert their power. Kilkenny was Ireland's largest inland town in 1300, making these defenses vital. The walls, breached only twice in their history, were eventually rendered obsolete by the introduction of gunpowder in the 16th century. In 2006, a conservation project began to stabilize the tower and restore the fallen walls, opening Talbot Tower Park to the public in 2018. Today, the tower sits within a small park featuring seating and illustrated panels that recount its history. Interestingly,.303 rifle bullets found during the restoration suggest the tower was used by snipers during the Irish Civil War. Visitors can explore the park freely and, by appointment, can access the interior of the tower and the roof.
