Camden Fort Meagher, perched on Ram's Head overlooking Cork Harbour, has been a strategic defensive site for centuries. The earliest fortifications date back to 1550, known as James' Battery. The current structure largely dates from the 1860s.Originally named Fort Camden, it was a key coastal artillery installation defending the mouth of Cork Harbour, along with Fort Mitchell (Spike Island) and Fort Davis (Whitegate). In 1938, it was handed over to the Irish Defence Forces and renamed Fort Meagher. It remained a military installation until 1989 when it was given to Cork County Council.After a period of being overgrown, local volunteers began restoring the fort in 2010, transforming it into a heritage tourism site. Today, visitors can explore the fort's labyrinth of underground tunnels and chambers, which make up approximately 65% of the structure. Exhibition rooms showcase the fort's history, including its role in defending Ireland and the west coast of England and Wales. One notable exhibit features the Brennan torpedo, the world's first practical guided weapon. The fort also offers stunning views of Cork Harbour, including the last anchorage point of the RMS Titanic.
