Discover more about Donegal Castle

Donegal Castle, majestically situated on the banks of the River Eske in the heart of Donegal Town, offers a captivating journey through Irish history. Originally constructed in 1474 by Hugh Roe O'Donnell, a powerful chieftain, the castle served as a stronghold and symbol of Gaelic power. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone numerous transformations. Following the Flight of the Earls in 1607, the castle was granted to Sir Basil Brooke, an English captain, who significantly renovated the structure in the Jacobean style, adding a manor house and other features. These additions blended seamlessly with the original tower house, creating a unique architectural fusion. Despite falling into ruin in the 18th century, Donegal Castle was meticulously restored in the 1990s. Today, visitors can explore the castle's various rooms, each showcasing different periods of its history. Highlights include the original 15th-century keep, the Jacobean manor house, and the intricately carved chimney-piece commissioned by Sir Basil Brooke. Informative panels throughout the castle detail its history and the lives of its past inhabitants. The uneven 'Trip Stairs' are also of note, designed to trip up any unsuspecting invaders. Donegal Castle provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Gaelic chieftains and English lords, offering a tangible connection to Ireland's past.
