    Public Transport

    To reach Rathmichael Wood from Dublin city center, take the DART train towards Bray. Get off at Shankill station. From Shankill station, walk to the bus stop and take the 145 bus towards Kilternan. Get off at the Puck's Castle Lane stop. Walk along Puck's Castle Lane for about 10 minutes; Rathmichael Wood will be on your right. Alternatively, take the bus E1 from Dublin City South, get off at Stonebridge Close in Shankill. Walk west on Stonebridge Road, turn right onto Ferndale Road, then turn right onto Puck's Castle Lane. The wood entrance will be on your left. DART fare from Dublin city center to Shankill is approximately €3 - €5. Dublin Bus fare is approximately €3.

    Driving

    If driving from Dublin city center, take the N11 southbound. Continue on the N11 until you reach the Shankill exit. Take the exit and merge onto the R119. Continue straight for about 2 kilometers until you reach Puck's Castle Lane. Turn left onto Puck's Castle Lane, and after about 500 meters, you will find Rathmichael Wood on your right. There is a small car park at the entrance to Rathmichael Wood on Puck's Castle Lane. Parking is free.

The woods surround Rathmichael Hill, where the remains of a Late Bronze Age hillfort can be found. This ancient site, once a place for gatherings and rituals, offers stunning views north over Dublin Bay, east towards Killiney and Dalkey, and south to Bray Head. The area has been a place of worship for millennia. Rathmichael Church, a National Monument, is believed to have been founded by St. Comgall of Bangor in the 6th century. The site features remnants of a round tower and unusual gravestones known as Rathdown Slabs, bearing Viking-influenced art. The woods themselves are a mix of coniferous and broadleaved trees, providing habitats for various wildlife, including foxes, pygmy shrews, and Sika deer. Trails wind through the woodland, offering an easy looped walk of 1.7km, taking approximately 30 minutes. Also in the area is Puck's Castle, likely constructed in the 15th century. The name 'Puck's Castle' may come from the Irish word *púca*, meaning ghost. According to local tradition, King James sheltered within the castle for a night during his flight southwards after his defeat at the Battle of the Boyne.
