    Discover more about Merlin Castle

Merlin Castle, also called Doughiska Castle, is a medieval tower house ruin situated in Merlin Woods, on the eastern side of Galway City. The castle's origins trace back to an early fortification built for Turlough O'Connor, the High King of Ireland, in the 12th century. The current three-story Anglo-Norman tower structure is believed to date back to the 15th or 16th century. Ownership of the castle passed through several prominent families, including the Blakes and the Lynches. The Lynch family was evicted in the mid-17th century, during which time the castle lost its roof. The castle was later granted to John Whaley, who then sold it to Francis Blake. The Blake family resided there until 1812, and it was during their time that the castle was renamed Merlin Castle. Architectural features include a small Sheela na Gig carving, one of the smallest in Ireland, located on the second floor. The castle also contains a secret chamber, or priest's hole, used as a hiding place for persecuted priests. Although visitors cannot access the interior, they can explore the castle's surroundings and the scenic Merlin Woods, which boasts diverse flora and fauna. The castle was restored in 2021 by the Galway City Council with funding from Fáilte Ireland.
