Getting there

Driving

If driving from Kenmare, take the N71 towards Glengarriff, then follow the R572 towards Castletownbere. Continue on the R572 for approximately 20 km until you reach the village of Ardgroom. The Ardgroom Stone Circle is located just off the R572, about 1 km from the village center. Look for signs directing you to the stone circle. There is a small parking bay next to the road. From there, a short walk across farmland leads to the circle. Parking is free.

Public Transport

To reach Ardgroom Stone Circle using public transport, take a bus from Glengarriff to Castletownbere. From Castletownbere, you will need to take a taxi to Ardgroom, as public transport options directly to the stone circle are limited. The taxi ride from Castletownbere to Ardgroom is approximately 15 km and may cost around €20-€30. It is advisable to book a taxi in advance to ensure availability. Bus Éireann operates a route from Kenmare to Castletownbere that passes through Ardgroom. From the Ardgroom stop, it is a short walk to the stone circle. A round trip bus from Beara to Cork costs.

Walking

For those already in Ardgroom village, the stone circle is accessible by foot. From the village center, head southwest on the R572 road for about 1 km. It's a pleasant walk with scenic views, and you will see the stone circle on your left as you approach. Be cautious of the ditches on either side of the path.

Ardgroom Stone Circle, also known as Canfea, is a captivating historical landmark nestled in the scenic region of County Cork, Ireland. Dating back to the Bronze Age (1000-1500 BC), this stone circle is a testament to ancient engineering and a site steeped in mystery and historical significance.Located on the Beara Peninsula, near the village of Ardgroom, the circle comprises eleven stones, nine of which remain standing. What sets Ardgroom apart is the unique tapering shape of its stones, pointing towards the sky. The circle has a diameter of approximately 7 meters. An additional standing stone is located a few meters east of the circle.Historians believe that stone circles like Ardgroom served as ritual and ceremonial sites, possibly for astronomical and calendrical purposes. Some believe the site was later used by the Celts. The views from the circle are stunning, encompassing mountains, hills, and the Kenmare River estuary.Visiting Ardgroom Stone Circle offers a chance to connect with Ireland's rich historical tapestry and appreciate the artistry of ancient cultures.
