Discover more about Ballybunion Castle

Perched dramatically on the cliffs of Ballybunion, County Kerry, the ruins of Ballybunion Castle offer a captivating journey into Ireland's past. Originally constructed in the early 16th century by the Fitzmaurice family, also known as the Geraldines of West Limerick, the castle occupies the site of an earlier promontory fort, highlighting the area's strategic importance throughout history. The castle's history is intertwined with the local Bunyan (Bonzon) family, who served as caretakers for the Fitzmaurices. However, the castle met a violent end in 1582 when it was destroyed by Lord Kerry, and William Óg Bunyan's lands were confiscated due to his involvement in the Desmond Rebellion. Despite changing ownership and suffering damage from sieges, battles, and natural events, including a lightning strike in 1998, the remaining structure continues to stand as a proud landmark. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, which include a portion of the east-southeast wall and remnants of a spiral staircase. The castle grounds offer stunning views of the surrounding coastline, including the Men's and Ladies' beaches, separated by the castle's promontory. The site is easily accessible and provides a picturesque backdrop for leisurely strolls and photography. The flying Irish and Canadian flags symbolize the welcoming nature of the town.
