The original Killarney House, once home to the Earls of Kenmare, was renowned as one of Ireland's finest mansions in the early 18th century. Known locally as 'The Mansion', this sprawling structure succumbed to fire in 1913, leaving behind only the stepped gardens and some original gate lodges.Following the fire, the Kenmare family relocated to a renovated stable block. After changing hands, the property was eventually purchased by John McShain and his wife Mary, who renamed it 'Killarney House'. The McShain family later sold the property to the Irish state, ensuring its preservation for future generations. After Mrs. McShain's death in 1998, the manor house was neglected, but in 2014, the Irish government launched extensive reconstruction and renovation work. The site was then closed until 2016, when it was opened to the public.Today, Killarney House and Gardens stands as a testament to its former glory, offering visitors a glimpse into the past and a starting point for exploring the wonders of Killarney National Park. The house features a visitor center with exhibits detailing the history of the house and the surrounding park. The gardens themselves provide a tranquil oasis, with weaving pathways, manicured lawns, and vibrant flowerbeds. It's an ideal place for families, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape.
