Discover more about Loher Stone Fort

Perched on an elevated slope overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Loher Stone Fort is a testament to Ireland's rich archaeological heritage. This well-preserved 'cathair,' or stone fort, provides visitors with a unique window into Ireland's Early Christian period. Dating back to the 9th century AD, the circular stone fort represents one of Kerry's most complete ancient defensive structures. Unlike many similar sites across Ireland, Loher Ringfort maintains its impressive original wall height, reaching up to 2.5 meters in places, making it an exceptional example of early medieval Irish engineering. The fort is believed to have been built as a defended farmstead for a local chieftain and their family. The strategic positioning of the fort, protected on three sides by mountains and overlooking Ballinskelligs Bay, provided both security and a vantage point to monitor the surrounding area. Inside the fort's walls, visitors can explore the remains of two houses: a circular roundhouse and a smaller rectangular structure. These dwellings were built upon the remains of even earlier wooden structures. Archaeological excavations revealed a souterrain (underground passage) beneath the circular house, which was likely used for food storage or as a refuge during attacks. Although the souterrain is no longer accessible, the site offers a fascinating insight into daily life within the fort's walls. The fort has been recently reconstructed. Today, Loher Stone Fort offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the Skellig Islands. Visitors can walk along the inner steps that crisscross and lead to the top of the ramparts of this circular fort, 20 m (65.6 ft) in diameter. The site is free to visit and provides a tranquil experience away from the crowds.
