Car
If you are driving, start by navigating to the town of Newcastle, which is a popular base for exploring the Mourne Mountains. From Newcastle, take the A2 road south towards the village of Annalong. After about 5 miles, turn onto the B27 road towards the Mourne Mountains. You will see signs for the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Continue on this road until you reach the parking area at the base of Doan. Parking may be available at the Mourne Park entrance, but be aware that there may be a small fee of around £5 for the day.
Public Transport
If you prefer public transportation, take a bus from Newry to Newcastle. Bus services such as the 238 or 240 run frequently. Once you arrive in Newcastle, you can take a taxi or a local shuttle service to the Mourne Park entrance. Be sure to check the local bus schedules in advance, as they may vary, and be prepared for a possible taxi fare of around £10-£15 to the parking area.
Walking/Hiking
Once you have parked your car or arrived at the Mourne Park entrance, you can begin your hike to Doan. The trailhead is well-marked and leads you directly towards the mountain. Ensure you have appropriate hiking gear and enough water and snacks for your journey. The hike to the summit of Doan is approximately 4 miles round trip and can take about 2-3 hours depending on your pace. The trails can be steep and rocky, so take your time and enjoy the stunning views along the way.
