Discover more about Merlin Park Woods

Merlin Park Woods, located on the eastern edge of Galway City, is a sprawling 80-hectare woodland offering a peaceful retreat from the urban bustle. The woods were originally part of the Blake family's estate, dating back to the 17th century. Named after their ancestral home believed to be the birthplace of the legendary wizard Merlin, the family donated the woods to Galway in 1946.Today, Merlin Park Woods is a diverse ecosystem with a mix of native trees like oak, ash, and hazel, alongside exotic species such as beech and sycamore. In spring and summer, the woods burst with wildflowers, including bluebells and wood anemones, creating a vibrant display. The woods are also home to a variety of wildlife, including red squirrels, foxes, badgers, and a wide array of bird species.Visitors can explore the woods via several trails, including the 3km Loop Trail and the 1.5km Nature Trail. The trails lead to historical features such as the ruins of Merlin Castle, a 15th or 16th-century tower house. The castle even features a Sheela na Gig, a stone carving, on its south wall. The Friends of Merlin Woods, a local volunteer group, actively works to conserve and promote the woods through guided tours, workshops, and clean-up events.
