Car
If you're driving from Bari, take the SS96 highway towards Matera. Follow the signs for Matera as you exit the highway. After approximately 65 km, merge onto the SS7 and continue for another 10 km. When you enter Matera, follow the signs for the city center (Centro Storico). You will eventually arrive at Viale Vittorio Veneto, where you can find parking facilities nearby.
Public Transportation
To reach Matera by public transport from Bari, take a train from Bari Centrale to Matera. The train journey takes about 1 hour and trains run regularly throughout the day. Once you arrive at Matera train station, you can either walk (approximately 20 minutes) or take a local bus to the city center. If you choose to walk, head east on Via Giuseppe Mazzini, then turn right onto Via Roma which will take you directly into the historic center of Matera.
Bus
From Bari, you can also take a direct bus to Matera. Look for the 'Ferrovie Appulo Lucane' bus service at the Bari bus terminal. The journey takes about 1.5 hours. Buses run frequently, and you can buy tickets at the terminal or online. The bus will drop you off in the city center of Matera, from where you can easily explore the city on foot.
