Upon arriving in Matera, follow the signs to the Sassi area, which is located in the historic center of the city. Parking is available in designated areas outside the Sassi; expect to pay around €1.50-€2.50 per hour, depending on the location. There are also larger parking lots like Parcheggio Via Sette Dolori, where you can leave your car for a day.
Bus
For those using public transportation, you can catch a bus from various locations in Basilicata. From Potenza, take the Lagonegro-Matera bus (Line 12) from the Potenza bus station. The journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. Tickets can be purchased at the station or on the bus, costing around €5. Once you arrive at the Matera bus station, it's about a 15-minute walk to the Sassi di Matera. Follow Via Don Minzoni and then Via Roma, which will lead you directly into the Sassi area.
Train
If you prefer traveling by train, you can take a train to Matera from nearby cities like Bari or Foggia. The train will take you to Ferrandina-Matera station, which is about 30 km from Matera. From the train station, you can take a local bus (Line 1) to the Matera bus station, which takes about 30 minutes and costs approximately €2. From the bus station in Matera, it’s a 15-minute walk to the Sassi.
Taxi
For a more direct approach, consider taking a taxi from any location within Matera or nearby towns. Taxis can be found at designated taxi stands or booked via phone. Expect to pay around €10-€20 depending on your starting point within the region.
