The Como War Memorial, or Monumento ai Caduti, is a towering presence on the Lake Como shoreline, serving as a poignant reminder of World War I and a tribute to the citizens of Como who lost their lives. Designed by the architect Giuseppe Terragni, with support from his brother Attilio, the mayor of Como at the time, the monument was commissioned by Mussolini's National Fascist Party and completed in 1933. Terragni's design, inspired by sketches by Italian Futurist Antonio Sant'Elia, embodies the Rationalist architectural style, characterized by its clean lines, geometric shapes, and minimalist aesthetic. The 30-meter-high tower is constructed of reinforced concrete, clad in blocks of gray marble. Inside, a monolith of granite bears the names of 650 fallen soldiers from Como. The monument's polished surface was designed to reflect the lake and sky, creating a mirroring effect.The monument stands in a public garden near the Tempio Voltiano. Visitors can climb the staircase to the top of the monument and enjoy views of the city and lake.
