Overview
Nestled between dramatic cliffs and the Tyrrhenian Sea, Atrani is a captivating village on the Amalfi Coast, retaining much of its ancient character. Once a vital part of the Republic of Amalfi, Atrani served as the location where doges were elected and buried in the Church of San Salvatore in Birecto. The village's name may originate from the Latin word 'ater,' meaning dark, reflecting its setting nestled among high rocks.Atrani's history is rich with influences from Greek and Etruscan settlements to Norman, Swabian, French, and Spanish rulers. The village was sacked by Pisa in the 12th century and later faced invasions from mercenaries. The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, with its Rococo facade and bell tower, stands as a testament to Atrani's resilience, built to give thanks for deliverance from invaders.Today, Atrani offers a tranquil escape with its iconic gray-sand beach, Spiaggia di Atrani, framed by cliffs and colorful houses. Visitors can explore the narrow alleyways, discover hidden art galleries, and enjoy local pastries like Pasticciotto atranese. A walk along Via dei Dogi leads to a waterfall, while a hike up to the Torre dello Ziro watchtower offers panoramic views. Atrani's charm has also attracted filmmakers, with the village recently featured in TV and film.
