Discover more about Mount Epomeo

Mount Epomeo, the highest point on the island of Ischia, stands at 789 meters (2,589 ft). Unlike a typical volcano, Epomeo is a volcanic horst, the result of uplifted magmatic masses from the seabed dating back to the Quaternary period. Around 55,000 years ago, a massive eruption of green tuff created a caldera, which later saw the intrusion of new magma, causing the central block of the island to rise by at least 900 meters. This resurgence shaped the island's volcanic activity and landscape. The name 'Epomeo' has Greek origins, deriving from 'Epopeus,' meaning 'to look around'. The mountain's slopes, once inhabited by Greeks and Romans, feature tufa-stone caves. In the 15th century, a small church and hermitage dedicated to Saint Nicholas were built within one of these caves, offering a place for meditation and daily tasks for monks and hermits. The ascent to Mount Epomeo, while requiring reasonable fitness, rewards hikers with breathtaking views of Ischia, Naples, Mount Vesuvius, Capri, and Sorrento. The trails, particularly the one starting from Fontana, wind through lush greenery and vineyards. At the summit, the Chiesa di San Nicola, a historic church carved directly into the mountain's rock, provides a tranquil space for reflection.Today, Mount Epomeo is not only a geological marvel but also a place of historical and spiritual significance, offering a unique perspective on the island of Ischia and its surroundings.
