The Suburban Baths (Terme Suburbane) of Pompeii stand as a remarkably well-preserved testament to Roman bathing culture. Situated just outside the Porta Marina, one of the main gates of ancient Pompeii, these baths offer panoramic views of the Bay of Naples. Constructed in the early 1st century AD, possibly during the reign of Emperor Tiberius (14–37 AD), they represent a later wave of architectural and infrastructural development in Pompeii.Unlike the older baths within the city walls, the Suburban Baths were designed with greater attention to luxury and thermal effectiveness. The building was a two-story structure; the upper floor contained three apartments, possibly rented for private lodging or commercial services. Large glass windows offered expansive views, setting these baths apart from more enclosed city bath structures. Some scholars suggest this upper area may have been used for prostitution, a theory supported by the erotic imagery found within.The bathhouse features a single-axis row layout, guiding bathers through a sequence of rooms with increasing temperatures. The complex includes an entrance hall, dressing room (apodyterium), cold room (frigidarium), warm room (tepidarium), hot dry room (laconicum), and hot room (caldarium). A heated swimming pool (piscina calida) was added after the earthquake of 62 AD. The Suburban Baths are famous for their erotic wall paintings in the apodyterium, the only such art found in a public Roman bathhouse. These frescoes depict explicit scenes and may have served as a humorous way for bathers to remember the location of their clothing lockers.
