Getting There

  • Walking

    The Torre dello Ziro is primarily accessed by walking from Pontone, a frazione of Scala. From the center of Pontone, follow the signs towards Atrani. After a 10-minute walk, you'll find steps on the left leading to Atrani; take these and follow the signs to 'Torre'. The path leads to the fortress walls and the tower. Note that the hike involves numerous stairs and may not be suitable for those with mobility issues. There are no entrance fees to access the tower.

  • Public Transport

    To reach Pontone, take a SITA bus from Amalfi towards Ravello or Scala. From Ravello or Scala, you can hike downhill towards Pontone. Bus tickets can be purchased at tobacconists or newsstands. A single trip ticket costs approximately €2.00-€2.90. From Pontone, follow the walking directions to the tower.

Constructed in 1480 by Antonio Piccolomini, Duke of Amalfi, the tower was built to defend against Saracen pirate attacks. It was part of the larger Castrum Scalelle fortress, a network of lookout points that protected the Republic of Amalfi.Strategically positioned on a spur of rock between Amalfi and Atrani, the Torre dello Ziro provided early warnings of maritime threats, with commanding views of the Gulf of Salerno and surrounding villages. The tower's design reflects its defensive purpose, featuring a cylindrical construction with a scarp base and crenellated walls.The tower is also known for the tragic legend of Giovanna d'Aragona, the Duchess of Amalfi, who was allegedly imprisoned and murdered in the tower in the early 16th century. Accused of having an affair with her court butler after her husband's death, she was reportedly locked away with her children and killed by her brothers. Some locals claim to hear her sorrowful cries at night.Today, the Torre dello Ziro is a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts.
