Torre di Cetara: Sentinel of the Amalfi Coast

Perched at the eastern edge of Cetara's beach, the Torre di Cetara is a captivating structure with a layered history. The original cylindrical tower, closest to the sea, dates back to the 14th century and was part of a coastal defense system established during the Angevin period. This system aimed to protect the Amalfi Coast from sea-borne attacks, especially during the War of the Vespers.In the 16th century, under the rule of Pedro de Toledo, the tower was expanded to enhance its defensive capabilities against Turkish raids. This expansion resulted in a double-height structure with a truncated pyramid shape, allowing cannons to be strategically positioned. The tower also served as a prison in the 15th century, holding figures involved in the Baron's conspiracy against King Ferdinand I of Aragon.Over the centuries, the tower underwent several transformations, including the addition of two stories in the late 1800s when it was privately owned. Today, the Torre di Cetara is owned by the municipality and houses a Civic Museum since 2011. The museum features exhibits dedicated to local artists, including Ugo Marano and Manfredi Nicoletti, as well as a section on the region's fishing traditions and the production of colatura di alici, a traditional anchovy sauce.Visitors can explore the tower's various levels, each reflecting a different era in its history. Climbing to the top rewards you with breathtaking views of Cetara, the coastline, and the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea. The surrounding area offers a delightful mix of narrow streets, traditional Mediterranean architecture, and charming eateries serving fresh seafood.
