Getting There

Walking

From the main entrance of the Pompeii archaeological site at Via Villa dei Misteri, 1, exit and turn right onto Via Villa dei Misteri. Walk for about 500 meters until you reach the intersection with Via Plinio. Turn left onto Via Plinio and walk straight for approximately 300 meters. Villa Imperiale will be on your right, just past the intersection with Via San Giuseppe.
Public Transport

From the Pompeii Scavi - Villa dei Misteri train station, take a local train towards Naples. Get off at the next stop, 'Pompei'. Upon exiting the train station, turn left onto Via Roma. Walk straight for about 400 meters, and Villa Imperiale will be on your left. A single train ticket costs approximately €1-3.

The Villa Imperiale, despite its name, has no proven connection to the Roman imperial family. Built in the 1st century BC, this grand suburban villa offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Pompeii's wealthy citizens. Its location just outside the city walls, near the Porta Marina, provided stunning views of the Gulf of Naples.The villa was significantly damaged in the earthquake of 62 AD and subsequently renovated. However, it was later partially destroyed to make way for granaries. Rediscovered in 1943 after Allied bombing damaged the area, excavations revealed a wealth of information about its architecture and decoration.The villa features impressive examples of Pompeian painting from the 3rd and 4th styles. The rooms are arranged on terraces that descend the natural slope, offering views of the sea. The oecus, a large rectangular hall, is adorned with frescoes depicting mythological scenes such as Daedalus and Icarus, Theseus and the Minotaur, and Theseus abandoning Ariadne. The villa also boasts spacious courtyards and marble floors with geometric patterns. Today, visitors can explore the portico, triclinium, diaeta, and parts of the peristyle, gaining insight into the refined lifestyle of ancient Pompeiians.
