Overview
Villa Jovis, meaning the Villa of Jupiter, is an ancient Roman palace constructed on Capri in 27 AD by Emperor Tiberius. The villa served as Tiberius's primary residence until his death in 37 AD, as he ruled the empire from the island. The largest of twelve villas commissioned by Tiberius on Capri, Villa Jovis covers approximately 7,000 square meters on Monte Tiberio. Its location was chosen for its strategic position and guaranteed privacy.Visitors can explore the remains of this once opulent complex, including living quarters, administrative spaces, and an intricate rainwater collection system. The design combines classical Roman villa architecture with fortress-like elements. The site is also home to the 'Tiberius' Leap,' a cliff rumored to be the location where the emperor threw unwanted guests and disobedient servants.The ruins offer panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples, the Sorrentine Peninsula, and the island of Capri.
