Villa Regina: A Window into Roman Wine Production

Located just north of Pompeii, Villa Regina in Boscoreale offers a compelling look into Roman rural life and, in particular, the production of wine. Dating back to the 1st century BC, this rustic villa provides a fascinating contrast to the grander villas of Pompeii and Herculaneum, showcasing the agricultural activities that sustained the region.Discovered in 1977, Villa Regina was carefully excavated and partially restored, revealing its layout and purpose. The villa is organized around a central courtyard, with various rooms dedicated to different stages of wine production. The highlight is the wine cellar (cella vinaria), which houses 18 large underground dolia (terracotta containers) used for storing grape must. These containers, capable of holding up to 10,000 liters, offer a tangible sense of the scale of wine production at the villa.Visitors can also see the remains of the torcularium, where grapes were pressed, as well as the service quarters and other agricultural facilities. Plaster casts of wooden fixtures, such as doors and windows, further enhance the visitor experience, providing a sense of the villa's original appearance. The Antiquarium of Boscoreale, a short walk from Villa Regina, complements the villa visit by displaying artifacts from various villas in the Pompeian countryside, illustrating rural life in Roman times. The museum's collection includes tools, kitchenware, and agricultural implements, offering a comprehensive picture of daily life in the region before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
