Giardini la Mortella: A Harmony of Nature and Music

Giardini la Mortella, located in Forio on the island of Ischia, is a testament to the vision and dedication of Lady Susana Walton. Created in 1958, the gardens offer a unique blend of natural beauty and musical heritage. Lady Walton, the wife of British composer Sir William Walton, transformed a rocky, volcanic landscape into a lush paradise.The gardens are divided into two distinct areas: the Valley (lower garden) and the Hill (upper garden). The Valley, designed with the help of landscape architect Russell Page, features a subtropical environment with a focus on water features, including fountains and ponds filled with papyrus, lotuses, and tropical water lilies. The Hill garden, in contrast, is characterized by Mediterranean flora and terraced landscapes, offering panoramic views of the Bay of Forio.Visitors can explore a diverse collection of plants from around the world, including tree ferns from Australia and New Zealand, magnolias, camellias, and various aromatic plants. The Victoria House is a highlight, showcasing the giant Victoria Amazonica water lilies. The Sala Thai, a meditation area surrounded by lotus flowers and bamboo, provides a tranquil space for reflection.Giardini la Mortella also celebrates the musical legacy of Sir William Walton. The William Walton Museum displays images by Cecil Beaton and a colorful farce by Lele Luttazzi. The Recital Hall hosts chamber music concerts in the spring and autumn, while the Greek Theatre stages symphony concerts during the summer. Lady Walton opened the gardens to the public in 1991 and established foundations to promote her late husband's music and preserve the gardens. Today, La Mortella belongs to Fondazione William Walton La Mortella, that manages the garden, opens it to the public, takes care of the administration , and is in charge of cultural activities.
