Overview
The Palazzo del Podestà, an imposing structure on Bologna's Piazza Maggiore, stands as a testament to the city's rich medieval history. Constructed around 1200, it served as the first seat of Bologna's government, housing the Podestà (the city's chief magistrate) and his officials. The palace is located near the Palazzo Comunale and faces the Basilica of San Petronio. The palace's architecture has evolved over the centuries. Originally built in a Romanesque style, it received a Renaissance facelift in 1484 by Aristotele Fioravanti. The palace wasn't ever coherently finished. The structure includes the Torre dell'Arengo, a bell tower whose bell was used to alert citizens of important events. One of the most fascinating features of the Palazzo del Podestà is the Voltone del Podestà, a vaulted space beneath the palace. This area possesses unique acoustic properties: whispers can be heard clearly from opposite corners of the archway. In the 16th century, terracotta statues of Bologna's patron saints were placed in the Voltone. Throughout its history, the Palazzo del Podestà has served various functions, including a courtroom, a theater, and even a space for playing ball games. Today, the Palazzo del Podestà hosts exhibitions and cultural events.
