Montevecchio Isolani represents one of the oldest continuous wine-producing traditions in the Colli Bolognesi region, with documented evidence of viticulture by the Isolani family dating back to 1456. The estate's deep historical roots are intertwined with Bologna itself, and the family has maintained an unbroken commitment to winemaking across nearly six centuries. Today, under the stewardship of Gualtiero and his family, the winery combines centuries-old practices with modern sustainable viticulture, producing organic DOC and DOCG wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Bolognese hills.

Organic Viticulture and Production

The 13-hectare vineyard focuses on three primary grape varieties: Grechetto Gentile, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Since 2015, the entire operation has been certified organic, reflecting the family's commitment to environmental stewardship and respect for the land. The winemaking process is personally overseen by Gualtiero, ensuring quality control from vine to bottle. The historic cellars, originally carved from rock in the late 1500s during the construction of a Senatorial Palace, now house modern temperature-controlled fermentation tanks alongside traditional French oak barrique and tonneaux used for aging the finest red wines. Concrete vats preserve the aromatic integrity of the wines during maturation.

The Tasting Experience

Visitors undertake a guided journey through the vineyard and into the ancient cellars, learning about the production methods and regional heritage. The tour concludes in the tasting room, where guests sample four carefully selected wines accompanied by a curated board of mortadella and local cheese. The experience typically lasts 90 minutes and is limited to groups of no more than 10 people, ensuring an intimate and personalized atmosphere. Tours are conducted in Italian, English, and Spanish by knowledgeable staff who share the family's passion for their craft.

Agriturismo Accommodations

Two restored farmhouses on the property offer overnight stays in a tranquil rural setting. The agriturismo features a swimming pool, horseback riding facilities, and direct access to the surrounding countryside. Rooms are housed in characteristic stone buildings that blend historical charm with modern amenities. The location provides a peaceful retreat while maintaining convenient access to Bologna and the broader region.

Perched on an enchanting hillside within the Emilian Apennines, the winery offers scenic panoramic views across the Colli Bolognesi landscape. The property is easily accessible by car from Bologna, approximately 20 minutes away, though the winding rural roads require private vehicle or taxi transportation. The elevated position and isolated setting create an atmosphere of serene seclusion while remaining conveniently close to urban amenities.
