Discover more about Castello di Buronzo

Castello di Buronzo, located in the picturesque province of Vercelli, is a must-see for those seeking a blend of history and breathtaking scenery. This impressive medieval fortress, with its towering stone walls and ancient battlements, provides an enchanting glimpse into the region's rich past. As you approach the castle, its commanding presence against the backdrop of the lush Italian landscape is striking. Originally built in the 11th century, the castle has served various purposes throughout its history, from a defensive stronghold to a noble residence. The castle began developing in the Middle Ages, clinging to one of the terraces of Baraggia, overlooking the Cervo stream. The oldest records of Castrum Burontii date back to the 11th-12th centuries, with the construction of the first fortification, which was later enlarged. In the 14th century, the castle already took the form of a complex of palaces surrounded by walls that originally opened with the crenellated tower-gate, which can still be admired today. Inside, the castle's architecture reflects the grandeur of its time, with beautifully preserved rooms that tell the story of the noble families who once inhabited it. Visitors can explore the castle's halls, admire its intricate stonework, and take in the stunning views from its towers. The castle extended well beyond the part that can be visited today and occupied the entire terrace that corresponds to the historic center of the village. Some of the castle wings have been restructured over the centuries and transformed into palaces. The castle is a rare example of a 'consortium castle'. In the 13th century, the noble family gained increasing wealth, and in the following century, it was divided into seven branches that decided to live together in the castle, adopting common rules of organization. Today, a visit to the consortium castle can be organized in two stages: a visit to the communal castle, which includes the oldest remains of the castle and the fortress, and a walk through the alleys of the village to discover the fortified houses and buildings that were part of the complex.
