Discover more about Parrocchia-Santuario Madonna della Moretta

Located just outside the historic center of Alba, the Parrocchia-Santuario Madonna della Moretta offers visitors a serene escape and a glimpse into the region's spiritual and artistic heritage. The sanctuary's origins trace back to 1685, when Giovanni Antonio Marengo erected a votive pillar dedicated to the Madonna of Loreto. This humble beginning marked the start of a site that would become a focal point of religious devotion in the area. In 1711, the pillar was replaced by a small country chapel, reflecting the growing popularity of the site among pilgrims. However, the present sanctuary dates back to the early 20th century, designed by Giuseppe Gualandi in a distinctive neo-Byzantine style. The church's layout is based on a Greek cross, with a large circular dome at its center. The interior features an impressive main altar and two side altars made of polychrome marble, dedicated to the Holy Family and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. One of the most significant artistic elements is the ancient mural painting from 1685, depicting the Madonna of Loreto and a kneeling shepherdess. This painting, created by an anonymous Piedmontese artist, was moved from the original votive pillar and chapel to its current location in the apse. The cupola, painted in 1910 by Fedele Finati and Sebastiano Nizza, depicts the Coronation of the Madonna amidst groups of saints and evangelists. The sanctuary also houses a notable collection of ex votos, offering insight into the devotion to the Madonna. The sanctuary also provides basic hospitality to pilgrims, with access to the parish oratory where they can have a meal.
