Discover more about Torre Troyana

Rising proudly in Piazza Medici, the Torre Troyana is one of Asti's most recognizable landmarks and a testament to its medieval past. Originally begun in the late 12th century, the tower was acquired and completed by the Troya family, wealthy bankers who sought to display their prominence. Finished between 1260 and 1280, its height even exceeded the city's restrictions at the time. The tower stands 44 meters tall and is constructed on a square plan. Its architecture showcases Romanesque influences, featuring intricate decorations and a distinctive design with three tiers of hanging arches. A bell, dating back to 1531, was added in the 16th century to mark the hours, lending the tower its nickname, the "Clock Tower". Climbing the 199 steps to the top rewards visitors with breathtaking 360-degree views of Asti and the surrounding landscape. Today, the Torre Troyana is the only tower in Asti open to the public, offering a glimpse into the city's medieval history. Access requires a ticket, which can be purchased at Palazzo Mazzetti and also grants entry to other archaeological sites and museums in Asti. The tower is generally open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with extended hours during the summer. Note that it's closed from November 1st to March 31st for safety reasons.
