The Acquedotto Felice is an iconic historical landmark in Rome, representing a significant chapter in the city's water supply history. Built in the late 16th century (completed in 1587) under Pope Sixtus V, born Felice Peretti, the aqueduct derives its name from the Pope himself. It was the first aqueduct to be constructed in Rome in thirteen hundred years. Spanning several kilometers, the Acquedotto Felice showcases impressive arches that rise majestically above the surrounding landscape. The aqueduct was designed by Matteo Bortolani, with Giovanni Fontana completing the work. It was created to supply water to the Viminale and Quirinale hills. The aqueduct is often surrounded by lush greenery, making it a perfect spot for picnics and leisurely strolls. As you explore the area, take time to appreciate the intricate details of the aqueduct's architecture and the engineering techniques employed centuries ago. The site is also part of a larger network of ancient aqueducts in the region, providing context for its significance in Roman history.
