    Discover more about Hadrian's Villa

Hadrian's Villa, or Villa Adriana, is a sprawling complex of ruins and archaeological remains built by Roman Emperor Hadrian between 118 and 138 AD near Tivoli. Covering an area of at least 1 square kilometer, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was more like an imperial garden city than a traditional villa. Hadrian, who reportedly disliked the palace on Palatine Hill in Rome, designed the villa as a personal retreat and a showcase for the architectural styles he admired during his travels across the Empire. Visitors can explore over 30 monumental and scenic buildings arranged on artificial esplanades, surrounded by gardens, water basins, and nymphaea. Key features include the Maritime Theatre, a private island retreat for the emperor; the Canopus, a long pool representing the Nile, adorned with sculptures; the Grandi Terme and Piccole Terme, showcasing advanced Roman bathing technology; and the Palazzo Imperiale, the heart of Hadrian's residence. The villa also housed libraries, sculpture gardens, and Greek and Latin theaters. Today, visitors can wander through the extensive grounds, imagining the opulence and grandeur of Roman imperial life. The site offers a glimpse into Hadrian's architectural vision and his desire to create a microcosm of the Roman world. The on-site museum displays artifacts discovered at the villa, including replicas of the Caryatids from the Erechtheion in Athens.
