Discover more about Orsini-Odescalchi Castle

Rising above the picturesque town of Bracciano, the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle is a formidable structure with over five centuries of history. Its origins trace back to the 10th century when it was a defensive tower against Saracen attacks. In the 15th century, the Orsini family, under Napoleone Orsini, transformed it into a magnificent castle, expanding the existing fortress. The castle's design is attributed to Francesco di Giorgio Martini, with contributions from Giovannino de' Dolci, who also worked on the Sistine Chapel. The castle served not only as a military stronghold but also as a luxurious residence. In 1481, Pope Sixtus IV sought refuge here, impressed by its grandeur. Throughout its history, the castle witnessed conflicts between powerful families like the Colonna and Borgia. In 1560, Paolo Giordano Orsini's marriage to Isabella de' Medici led to further embellishments, with artists like the Zuccari brothers adding frescoes. In 1696, the Odescalchi family acquired the castle, preserving its artistic and architectural heritage. Today, visitors can explore richly frescoed halls, admire antique weapons, and wander through the roof garden with its panoramic lake views. The castle also hosts weddings and events, blending history with modern celebrations.
