Terme Eleniane: Echoes of Ancient Rome

The Terme Eleniane, also known as the Baths of Helena, were an ancient Roman bath complex constructed in the 3rd century AD. The baths are located in the area between the Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme and Porta Maggiore, within the Severian residential complex. These baths owe their name to Helena, the mother of Constantine I, who restored them after a fire in 323-326 AD. Originally built during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus, the Terme Eleniane were an integral part of the imperial residence. The complex was strategically located near the Aqua Celimontana, ensuring a constant water supply. The layout of the baths, known through Renaissance drawings by Andrea Palladio and Giuliano da Sangallo, reveals an asymmetrical design that integrated features of both grand imperial baths and smaller bathing complexes. Today, the visible remains of the Terme Eleniane are limited to a few structures at the intersection of Via Eleniana and Via G. Sommeiller. These remnants include parts of a large cistern composed of twelve interconnected chambers arranged in two parallel rows. This cistern, believed to have been supplied by a branch of the Aqua Alexandrina aqueduct, highlights the advanced engineering of the Roman Empire.
