From Rome, the cheapest way to reach Caprarola is by bus. Take the bus from Lgt M. Llo Diaz/Ponte Milvio to CAPRAROLA | Ist. A. FARNESE # f2563 via ROMA | Via Flaminia. The journey takes approximately 2h 23m and costs between €3 and €12. Alternatively, take the train from Roma Termini to Orte, followed by a taxi to Caprarola, which takes about 2h 8m and costs €50 - €85. From Viterbo, take the COTRAL bus from VITERBO | Porta della Verità # f804 to CAPRAROLA | Via Cimina. The bus journey takes approximately 29 minutes and costs €1-€2.
Walking

Villa Farnese is located directly above the town of Caprarola and is easily accessible on foot from the town center. From Piazza Farnese, stairs ascend to a series of terraces leading to the villa's entrance. The walk is uphill but offers rewarding views of the town and surrounding countryside.

From Rome, drive approximately 59 km to Caprarola. Take the SS2 Cassia road until you reach the turnoff for Caprarola. Follow the signs to Caprarola. Parking is available in the town. Perched atop a hill overlooking the town of Caprarola and the surrounding countryside, Villa Farnese is a magnificent example of Renaissance architecture. Built between 1559 and 1575 for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the villa was designed by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola and later modified by others. Its pentagonal shape, derived from the foundations of a former fortress, is unique among Renaissance villas.The villa's interior is lavishly decorated with frescoes by renowned artists, depicting mythological and historical scenes. The Sala dei Fasti Farnesiani (Hall of the Farnese Deeds) is particularly impressive, showcasing the achievements of the Farnese family. The villa's five floors each served a different function, with the main rooms located on the piano nobile. The central loggia, now glazed, offers panoramic views of the town and countryside.The gardens of Villa Farnese are equally remarkable, featuring terraced landscapes, fountains, and sculptures. The gardens were designed in the style of Villa d'Este at Tivoli. A walk through the chestnut woods leads to the giardino segreto (secret garden) with its casino, a small summerhouse with loggias.Today, Villa Farnese is owned by the Italian state and open to the public as a museum and historical site. It has also served as a filming location for TV shows about the Italian Renaissance.
