Discover more about Malpaga Castle

Malpaga Castle stands majestically in the Bergamo valley, a testament to centuries of history and Renaissance splendor. Originally built in the 14th century as a military fortress, it gained prominence in 1456 when Bartolomeo Colleoni, the General Captain of the Republic of Venice, acquired it. He transformed the castle into a sumptuous country residence, hosting illustrious figures of the time. The castle's square layout is surrounded by two lines of walls and a ditch, reflecting its design as both a military base and a noble residence. Inside, the walls are adorned with remarkable frescoes by artists like Romanino, depicting mythological and allegorical scenes, as well as moments from daily life at Colleoni's court. These frescoes, commissioned by Colleoni's heirs, celebrate his legacy and the visit of King Christian I of Denmark in 1474. Today, Malpaga Castle is privately owned and open to the public as a museum. Visitors can explore the richly decorated rooms and outdoor spaces, experiencing the atmosphere of the Lombard Renaissance. The castle also hosts various events, including guided tours, workshops, and historical reenactments, offering engaging experiences for families and history enthusiasts.
