Walking

From Piazza Vecchia in Città Alta, walk south along Via Gombito. Continue onto Via Colleoni, then turn right onto Via Salvecchio. Follow Via Salvecchio as it curves to the left and becomes Viale delle Mura. Porta San Giacomo will be visible on your right after a short walk. The walk is approximately 10-15 minutes. There are no costs associated with walking.
Public Transport

From Bergamo railway station, take bus line 1 towards Città Alta. Get off at the Viale delle Mura 40 stop, which is about 50 meters from Porta San Giacomo. The journey takes approximately 20-25 minutes. A single ticket within one zone costs €1.70 and is valid for 75 minutes. Alternatively, a 24-hour ticket for Bergamo City costs €4.90.

Porta San Giacomo, perhaps the most beautiful of the four gates in the Venetian walls, stands as a proud testament to Bergamo's history and architectural elegance. Constructed in 1592, it is unique for being crafted from white and pink marble sourced from the Zandobbio quarries in Val Cavallina. This gate served as the primary entrance to the upper city for those arriving from Milan.The gate's design, attributed to Buonaiuto Lorini, showcases a Tuscan style with a triangular pediment supported by classical semi-columns. Adorning the structure is the Lion of Saint Mark, a symbol of the Venetian Republic, signifying their dominion over Bergamo from 1428 to 1797. Unlike some of the other gates, Porta San Giacomo was designed to be a welcoming entrance rather than a strictly defensive structure.Over the centuries, Porta San Giacomo has undergone several transformations. In 1780, a stone bridge was added to improve access. Later renovations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries further enhanced the entrance. Today, visitors can walk through Porta San Giacomo, explore the nearby ramparts, and enjoy panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside. The gate is particularly stunning during sunset, when the sky is painted in vibrant hues. From the balustrade, one can admire the Venetian fortifications and the Lower City stretching towards the Apennine Mountains.
