Discover more about Birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci

Nestled in the Montalbano hills, a short distance from the medieval town of Vinci, lies the Casa Natale di Leonardo da Vinci, the birthplace of the legendary Leonardo da Vinci. This ancient rural complex, with its earliest documented mention dating back to 1427, holds immense historical and cultural significance as the place where the Tuscan genius was born on April 15, 1452. Donated to the Municipality of Vinci in 1952, the house was transformed into a museum to preserve Leonardo's memory and origins. Today, visitors can explore the house and experience an audiovisual narrative, “Leonardo in Vinci: a genius is told,” which utilizes three-dimensional technologies to recreate Leonardo's intimate and personal universe. A life-size hologram depicts Leonardo in his later years, reflecting on his past and his deep relationship with the territory of Vinci and Montalbano – a landscape that served as a source of great inspiration for his studies and drawings. The museum also features interactive technology, “Leonardo Touch,” allowing visitors to explore Leonardo's pictorial and graphic work through his drawings and paintings. Another fascinating section, “Leonardo's Last Journey,” displays a model that reproduces the itinerary taken by the great master in 1516, from papal Rome to his final resting place, the Château de Clos Lucé in Amboise. You'll also find a section devoted to the Battle of Anghiari, Leonardo's famous unfinished work, with 3D digital reconstructions and copies made by his contemporaries. Outside the house, you can explore the surrounding territory through various itineraries, including the Strada Verde (Green Road), an ancient trail through the woods connecting Anchiano to Vinci. This path offers a beautiful walk surrounded by the natural beauty of Tuscany, allowing you to connect with the landscapes that inspired Leonardo's genius.
