Discover more about Chiasso Barletti

Chiasso Barletti, nestled in the heart of Lucca, is a captivating step back in time. This narrow medieval alleyway, the last of its kind in Lucca, connects Via Santa Lucia and Via Fillungo. The word 'chiasso' itself refers to a narrow, often dark and winding lane. Chiasso Barletti derives its name from the Barletti family, prominent in Lucca during the 1300s. The family's influence waned by 1360 with the death of Landino Barletti. In 1308, the government decreed the closure of such alleys for hygienic reasons. Families who collaborated with the closure could have the street named in their honor. Today, Chiasso Barletti maintains its medieval charm, offering a pedestrian-only experience. Artisan workshops and unique shops line the lane, inviting visitors to explore. The architecture reflects the medieval era, with buildings seemingly tilting inward, creating a snug, enclosed feeling. Chiasso Barletti also holds historical significance. In 56 BC, Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus allegedly renegotiated the First Triumvirate here. The Barletti family's original tower house still stands on the corner, a testament to the alley's enduring history.
