Discover more about Ameglia Castle

Ameglia Castle, a historic fortress in the Liguria region of Italy, stands as a testament to the area's rich and complex past. Mentioned as early as the 10th century, the castle was initially under the ownership of the Bishop of Luni, highlighting Ameglia's strategic importance with its court, fish market, and port. In 1174, inhabitants of Pietracoperta, destroyed by the Genoese, fortified it with a defensive tower. The castle served as the Bishop's residence until the 14th century when Castruccio Castracani took ownership. In 1470, the castle and village were sold to the Banco di San Giorgio of Genoa, linking its destiny to Genoa. Its defensive role diminished in the 19th century, becoming the seat of the Municipality of Ameglia. The castle's architecture features a rectangular building with a circular tower and trapezoidal walls, reflecting various reconstructions over time. The village was built around the castle in concentric circles. Today, visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved structure, wander through the narrow, winding streets of Ameglia, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The castle provides ample opportunities for photography, especially at sunset. The site is a blend of historical monument and peaceful retreat.
