Discover more about Malgrate Castle

Malgrate Castle, located in the picturesque Lunigiana region of Tuscany, stands as a proud testament to medieval military architecture. Situated in the municipality of Villafranca in Lunigiana, the castle's origins trace back to the 12th and 13th centuries, with significant development occurring around 1275. Its strategic position atop a hill overlooking the Bagnone River valley made it a crucial defensive point, controlling key routes from the Cisa Pass, Apennines, and Garfagnana. Originally built by the Malaspina family of Filattiera, the castle served both defensive and residential purposes. Its most distinctive feature is the 25-meter-tall round tower, a hallmark of Lunigiana castles. Over the centuries, the castle underwent several transformations, including a conversion into a fortified residence in 1641 by the Marquises Ariberti of Cremona. Despite these changes, it retains its medieval character, with a trapezoidal walled curtain, Guelph crenellations, loopholes, and machicolations. After a period of abandonment, the castle has been restored and is now open to the public. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, walk along the walls, and imagine life in medieval times. The castle also offers stunning views of the Lunigiana landscape, making it a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers. The castle is managed by the Istituto Valorizzazione Castelli.
