Discover more about Rocca di Montevitozzo

Rocca di Montevitozzo, also known as La Roccaccia, stands as a testament to medieval power and strategic defense in the Tuscan landscape. Located near Sorano within the Monte Penna Natural Reserve, this ruined fortress offers visitors a unique blend of historical intrigue and natural beauty. Originally known as Rocca Tèdula, the fortress dates back to at least 1188, when it was mentioned in a papal bull of Pope Clement III. It was likely built by the Aldobrandeschi family to dominate the surrounding valleys and easily spot potential enemy attacks. The fortress later became a point of contention between the Ottieri of Montorio and the Orvietani before being ceded to the Orsini of Pitigliano. In the early 17th century, it came under the control of the Medici and was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Today, visitors can explore the imposing ruins, including remnants of a double defensive wall and the base of what was once a formidable watchtower. The walls, constructed in the local filaretto style, vary in thickness from 80 to 130 cm. From its high vantage point, the Rocca offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding valleys stretching out to the sea. The area is ideal for trekking and nature lovers, with numerous woodland trails and unpaved roads within the Monte Penna Natural Reserve.
