Discover more about Rocca Silvana

Rocca Silvana, also known as Rocca Selvena or Roccaccia Selvena, stands as a testament to the region's rich medieval past. Located near the village of Selvena in the municipality of Castell'Azzara, this ruined castle was once the most powerful fortification in the Mount Amiata area. Originally built in the 9th century, Rocca Silvana was initially owned by the Abbey of San Salvatore al Monte Amiata. In the centuries that followed, it became the property of the Aldobrandeschi family, a prominent feudal dynasty. The castle's strategic importance grew due to its proximity to the valuable cinnabar and mercury mines, which contributed significantly to its wealth. Its commanding position atop a rocky hill, approximately 600 meters high, provided natural defenses with steep cliffs on three sides overlooking the Fiora River valley. Throughout its history, Rocca Silvana was a coveted prize, enduring sieges and disputes between powerful cities like Siena and Grosseto. In the mid-14th century, Siena gained control, but only for a short period. Later, it became part of the fief of Pitigliano under the Orsini family and eventually integrated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The fortress gradually declined, and by the 17th century, it was abandoned. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of the castle's double-walled enclosure, including the outer walls that once surrounded the inhabited area and the inner walls that protected the feudal palace. A notable feature is the pentagonal tower, which served as a keep and offered enhanced defenses. Excavations and restoration efforts in recent years have helped stabilize the ruins, revealing traces of other buildings, such as the cistern and chapel.
