    Discover more about Tomba Ildebranda

The Tomba Ildebranda, or Tomb of Ildebrando, stands as the most celebrated monument within Sovana's Etruscan necropolis, part of the Archaeological Park of the Tuff Cities. Discovered in 1924, it dates back to the 3rd-2nd century BC and is considered among the most significant Etruscan monuments. Despite bearing the name of Pope Gregory VII, who was born Ildebrando of Sovana in the 11th century, the tomb has no direct connection to him or Christianity. The name was given to honor the most famous citizen of Sovana, as the identity of the tomb's original occupant remains a mystery. The tomb is carved directly into the tufa rock, and is designed in the style of a Greek temple. It originally featured a high podium accessible by two side stairways, with twelve columns supporting a decorated frieze. The frieze was adorned with griffins, human figures, and plant motifs, showcasing the Etruscans' love for vibrant colors. Sadly, much of the original structure has been lost due to the fragility of the tufa. Beneath the monument lies the burial chamber, accessed via a descending corridor. The chamber itself is unadorned, having been looted in ancient times. A unique feature is a separate tomb dating back to the 4th century BC, connected by a corridor and featuring a beautifully coffered ceiling. The Tomba Ildebranda is not only an architectural marvel but also a sacred site, likely serving as a landmark for travelers in the Sovana area.
