Located on Via Domenico Ridola in Matera, the Chiesa del Purgatorio is a unique and captivating religious building. Constructed between 1725 and 1747, the church stands as a testament to Baroque architecture with a distinctive macabre theme. The church owes its existence to the Brotherhood of Purgatory, who funded its construction and lent it their name. The facade, designed by Vitoantonio Buonvino and Bartolomeo Martemucci, immediately grabs attention with its decorations centered on death and redemption. Skulls and skeletons adorn the exterior, serving as a constant reminder of mortality. Angels, penitents engulfed in flames, and baskets of fruit add to the elaborate composition, while a statue of the Madonna with Child graces the highest point. The wooden portal is divided into sections featuring skulls of both the elite and commoners. The interior follows a Greek cross layout, topped by an octagonal dome resting on Corinthian columns. Inside, you'll find 18th-century paintings and, above the entrance, a pipe organ built in 1755 by Leonardo Carelli. The church also houses eight canvases depicting the Passion of Christ by Francesco Oliva.
