Established in 1997, the park spans over 27,000 hectares across the provinces of Potenza and Matera. The park's most striking feature is the Piccole Dolomiti Lucane, sandstone peaks reminiscent of the Dolomites. The park is a haven for biodiversity, with forests of turkey oak, chestnut, oak, and maple. Wildlife includes foxes, wild boars, wolves, and various bird species, such as peregrine falcons and golden orioles. The park also protects historical sites, including the remains of a Lucanian town dating back to the 6th-4th centuries BC on Monte Croccia.
