Discover more about Castello Di San Colombano Al Lambro

The Castello di San Colombano Al Lambro, located in the Metropolitan City of Milan, stands as a testament to centuries of Lombardy history. Its origins trace back to the 6th century, around the same time as the founding of the Bobbio monastery. The castle's strategic importance was recognized by Frederick Barbarossa, who rebuilt it in 1164 after its destruction during conflicts with Milan. Throughout its history, the castle has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting the needs of its various owners. These included the Visconti-Sforza family, the Certosini monks of Pavia, and the Belgioioso family, who converted the castle into their noble residence. In 1951, it passed to the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano and was later sold to private owners before a portion was acquired by the Parish of San Colombano and eventually the Municipality in the 1980s. The castle is divided into two main sections: the 'ricetto,' which once housed the civilian population, and the 'rocca,' the military stronghold situated on the hilltop, which remains privately owned. Visitors can enjoy a walk in the park along the walls and tour some of the castle's noble rooms, which still bear traces of past eras. The castle also occasionally hosts cultural events.
